The research role of Scripps Pier

Farther along the La Jolla coast, the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier supports ocean monitoring, small-boat and scientific-diving operations. UC San Diego dates the modern pier to 1988, replacing the original 1916 structure. It is an active research facility, and ordinary access is restricted to authorized personnel; the institution provides information about public tours.
